Second Person Dies in Saturday Afternoon Route 1 Crash in Milton

Delaware State Police say both drivers have now died in a Saturday afternoon crash that shut down Coastal Highway in Milton.

Troopers say 31-year-old Andrew Hengel of Newark succumbed to his injuries on Monday after being transported to Beebe Medical Center. A 75-year-old Frederica man, identified as Steven M. Thompson also died in the crash. An additional occupant, a 69-year-old woman was in the vehicle with Thompson. She sustained serious injuries.

The incident happened on Saturday around 2:51 p.m. on Coastal Highway (Route 1) in the area of Eagles Crest Road in Milton. Troopers say Hengel, the operator of an Audi A3 failed to brake, striking the rear of Thompson’s Toyota RAV 4, forcing him off the southbound span of the road, causing the vehicle to overturn. The Audi also exited the road, striking a chain link fence.

The investigation is ongoing, although Troopers say impairment is being investigated as a factor in this crash.
