School Bus Driver Charged with Vehicular Assault After Intentionally Slamming on Brakes

Delaware State Police have arrested a 65-year-old Dagsboro man after he intentionally slammed on a school bus’s brakes, injuring students on board.

Troopers say the incident happened on Tuesday, January 28 during an afternoon Long Neck Elementary School bus route. The driver, identified as Granville Lawson intentionally slammed on the bus’s brakes and subsequently said on the bus’s PA system: “See what I can do when you get out of your seats.” Troopers say Lawson never warned students to remain in their seats before slamming on the brakes. 10 of the parents whose children sustained injury declined prosecution of Lawson in lieu of disciplinary action by the school district.

During the incident, there were 30 students on board ranging in age from 6 to 11 years old and a 77-year-old adult aid. 11 victims sustained injuries ranging from bruising, to abrasions and concussion-like symptoms. Lawson was taken into custody and charged on 9 counts of Second Degree Reckless Endangering and 11 counts of Third Degree Vehicular Assault. He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.
